This Must Have Taken Ages To Do

So now we know what happens in movie theatres between session while we’re all standing outside waiting to see the latest greatest box office success "Snakes On A MF Plane" or "Rambo Part VII - Babmbi’s Revenge".

For those of you too young to truly appreciate and remember the phenomena, you can read all about SPACE INVADERS here on the intarwebs, which itself seemed as far fetched as videos games back in 1978.

Folding Chair Meets Modern Design School

It’s called FlexibleLoveâ„¢ experimental furniture and was conceived as a way to seat between 1-16 people cheaply and quickly.  Made from 100% recycled wood and paper materials to keep it low cost, and using pre-existing manufacturing techniques to keep it simple.

Personally I would prefer to see some "real life" testing with normal people in real world sitting and lounging-around situations before getting too excited about all this.  They seem to spend a lot of time whizzing about and reconfiguring the seat, and very little time actually having people SIT on the thing.  Interesting concept none the less…

Possibly what amazes me most about this is that
the domain www.flexiblelove.com was still available.

MOTD: Hurry Don’t Be Late…

From the song REMINISCING by the masters of harmony LITTLE RIVER BAND today’s MOTD features what must surely be one of the great opening lines to any song…

"Friday night it was late.. I was walking you home.. we got down to the gate.. I was dreaming of the night"

A single breath, rapid fire lyrical delight that nicely set’s up the the rhyme for the short sharp second line of the song "Would it turn out right".  Now everyone is familiar with the album version of this song that’s bound to be on high rotation down at the local Gold-FM radio station. First recorded in 1978 with the band’s original vocalist GLENN SHORROCK, the song reached #3 in the Australian Top 40 and made it to #5 over in the USA, the first of six consecutive Top 10 US Singles for LRB.

In 1982, Glenn Shorrock left the band to pursue a solo career. His replacement was a young looking JOHN FARNHAM who fronted LRB from 1982-1984 until leaving himself to continue his successful late 80’s "You’re The Voice" fuelled solo career. The version of REMINISCING we present for you as today’s MOTD is a 1983 live performance by LRB with Farnham manning the mic.

With LIVE vocal harmonies the equal of any studio recoding from The Beach Boys or Bee Gees, we see on display the talent of the LRB performers and especially Mr Farnham.  I reckon even Glenn Shorrock, who wrote and performed the album version would be envious at vocal talent, and on stage presence that "Farnsie" brings to this performance.  Think of this version next time you hear the original on the radio. And enjoy today’s MOTD.

Hey You… Stop Saying Buffalo

"Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo"

Click Mr Happy for the FULL STORY

If I told you that sentence is not only using correct grammar but also makes perfect sense…. what would you say ?  Well, I’m shocked…. there’s no need for THAT kind of language please, save it for the front bar, or school playground.

And just to annoy you some more, I’m going to tell you that "Buffalo!" is also a grammatically correct, legitimate sentence.  It’s true. Don’t believe me…?

MOTD: He Came Slightly Unstuck In Time

Something a little different for our MOTD. You may have heard the news that KURT VONNEGUT passed away this week on Wednesday at the age of 84 in his Manhattan home, the result of a fall some weeks earlier that caused serious brain damage.  For those not familiar with his work, the link above can do a better job filling you in than I.

For those too lazy to read for themselves, Kurt Vonnegut was an American WWII soldier, turned novelist and writer. His time as an advanced forward scout for the 106th INFANTRY DIVISION saw him captured in Dec of 1944 during the BATTLE OF THE BULGE and subsequently held as a German POW in the city of DRESDEN. He was there during the ALLIED COMBING CAMPAIGN of Feb 1945, one of only seven US POW’s to survive those bombings and became a first hand witness to the horrific aftermath.
On the subject he recalled "Utter destruction… carnage unfathomable". It was these events that greatly influenced his life’s literary work.

One of his more famous works was the 1969 novel SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE, the title being a reference to his place of detention in Dresden, an underground meat packers slaughterhouse, and the reason he and his fellow POW’s survived the Allied bombings.  Let’s move forward in time to the year 2003 and we are nearly there.  Kurt got together with Melbourne musician and composer SIMON HESELEV to work on a collaborative spoken-word project in which Kurt reads a passage from his novel Slaughterhouse Five, and Simon sets it to music, which we present for you here today in memory of Kurt Vonnegut.

It takes a little bit to get going, but once it takes off, the imagery created by the words is profound and the message a poignant one, from a man who was there and witnessed these events with his own eyes, ears, nose, and hands.

RIP:  Kurt Vonnegut 1922 - 2007

A Life Size Whale Inside Your Monitor

This is the yang part of today’s Yin-and-Yang of whale related posts.  Designed to balance out the destruction and gory’ness of the previous posts in our triumvirate whale series.
View Parts ONE and TWO

The crew over at the WHALE and DOLPHIN CONSERVATION SOCIETY have managed to fit a full size adult BLUE WHALE inside a computer monitor. And what’s more, through the magic of the internet, they are able to offer this amazing feat of nature and physics, to it’s readers, including YOU.

Click the picture above to see a sample of what your whale will look like. Click HERE to download your own lifesized blue whale into your monitor. It doesn’t matter what size monitor you have. I’ve tested it with different sizes and the elements of your whale remain the same life-size across all devices.

As you’re scrolling about your blue whale, consider that you are look at the LARGEST creature to ever exist in the six billion year history of our planet. Bigger than any of the dinosaurs, bigger than any other animal, bigger even than Oprah before the Atkins.  Blue whales are typically 30m long and weigh 180,000kg with hearts as large as a Volkswagon Beetle. When nursing from their mothers, they drink 400 litres of milk and gain 90kg of body weight per DAY !!!

Sadly little of substance is really known about these magnificent creatures. We don’t even know for sure how long they live. The longest recorded study of a single blue whale is only 34 years. Estimates are they live for at least 80 years. But we won’t know for sure for some time yet. We don’t know where they breed, the details of the mating procedure. Which must be an impressive event given that the blue whales penis is thought to be over 2m long, but even this is speculative given that a true measurement of an erect male blue whale penis can only be made during mating, and we don’t KNOW where they go to breed.

There are many excellent blue whale resources available HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE.

And in case you were wondering how they would look all lined up together, passing you by as you sit stuck in traffic, riding the train, or waiting in line at the bank (do people still GO to banks ?) then wonder no more.

Presenting the DOT CLOCK.
