Your Weekly This-Is-True Video Newsletter

We bring  you today the first in what will be an ongoing series of weekly video newsletters courtesy of the crew from This-Is-True.  Those of us who read the newsletter know it simply as "True" and you can subscribe to the free weekly email newsletter yourself here at the This-Is-True homepage. WD has been a reader for many years, recently upgrading to the paid version.

"This is True is a weekly syndicated newspaper column by Colorado humorist Randy Cassingham. True reports on bizarre-but-true news items from legitimate newspapers from around the world (never "tabloids"). Each story ends with commentary by Randy — a tagline which is humorous, ironic or opinionated. An online pioneer, True has been publishing on-line weekly since June 1994."

The video below, which we will bring to you each week at WD, is the sit back and relax, video version of the free email newsletter.

If you like what you see, you should consider also subscribing to the sites sister publication,  The True-Stella-Awards newsletter. Published less frequently than the regular True, it is compelling reading that documents outrageous real life legal cases that really do make you ask "What the HECK is going on in today’s world".  The name originates from the 1992 real life legal case, that became urban-legend, of 79 year old Stella Liebeck who spilled a McDonald’s coffee into her lap, then sued McDonald’s for the burns it caused, and was awarded US$2.9 million by a jury. Read the REAL facts of the case here…

Sit Down For Your Virtual Haircut

First things first. You WILL need headphones for this otherwise you might as well not bother. It won’t work. For those willing to take a few minutes to follow it through it’s worth your effort. If you’ve been reading this site for some time, you know that I’m NOT here to waste your time. If it wasn’t worth doing, I wouldn’t post it.

I suggest downloading the audio file onto your iPod or similar MP3 player. Put in your earbuds, sit down in your favourite chair, press PLAY and relax while our crew gives you a virtual trim and tidy up in the WD Barbershop. When listened to properly, in a quite room, with good earphones, this is a freakily cool experience. I’ve said too much already. Just download the sound file by RIGHT-CLICKING on the link below and SAVE-AS, and enjoy your virtual hair cut courtesy of the WD Team.

I just listened to it again for the purposes of writing this post and yeah…
It’s a weird and cool thing

Seville’s Solucar Solar Power Tower

In Spain the rain stays mainly on the plain… Well apparently NOT according to the folks who’ve built this amazing working full scale, production solar power tower to generate electricity near the city of Seville.  You can click on the pics below to get a look at this marvel of modern engineering, but you need to watch the video to get a true appreciation for the enormous scale of it all.

Six hundred giant mirrors, one hundred meters tall, powering 60,000 homes. And all with ZERO emissions. Very clever people those Spanish

Countries like Australia are dilly dallying around talking about green-this and enviro-that and turning the whole issue into a political mess that will never ever get off the ground here. This is despite our climate and continent being the most ideal on Earth to support such technologies with hot, dry, sunny, geologically stable, modern technological infrastructure, easy access to technology and skilled workers needed to build and maintain such facilities, thousands of km2 of suitable land. Meanwhile Spain just goes ahead and DOES it.  More here

WD Beach Walk Sunday 27th May

This is some content created on my beach walk Sunday 27th May. Would have taken more but the batteries on the digicam decided to die suddenly. So this was all I got. This first one is your garden variety panorama pic. Nothing spectacular. The wrong time of the day for that kind of thing. It was interesting to note how the recent rains have greened up the dune vegetation considerably in the last few weeks. And the winter seaweed has started to arrive also. As always here on WD, you can Click The Pic to view the larger version.

The next item below is a short one minute video of a duck that was swimming about and "fishing" amongst the seaweed in the shallows a bit further along the beach. I’ve seen these ducks swimming at this beach many times, but this was the first time I had a digicam with me to capture the action.  You can click HERE to view a map of the area showing the exact spots where this all took place.

George C Bush Enjoying The Saturday Sunshine

These are some pics of my coffee bush that I call George C Bush.  I figure that my George is a least as smart as the other one. And I know he makes less mistakes and causes less misery in the world. Anyway, I’ve had him for nearly two years and he’s tripled in size during that time.  I don’t know what varietal of coffee bush he is. All I know is he’s definitely from the coffea-arabica species ,the other species being coffea-canephora (robusta). Will have to wait a few more years until he fruits.

Microsoft’s New Surface - AWESOME

The good folk from Redmond who just finished shipping Windows Vista have today revealed details of a new computing concept to replace the traditional desk bound computers, and even the mobile and convenient laptops. Simply called SURFACE I have to say it looks very awesome and I can see Apple Inc just saying "Damn, I wish WE invented that first"

To best see what it’s all about you need to watch the three videos over on the the SURFACE website.  There are several moments, esp in the second two, that make you go "WOW… that is just extremely cool…  I want it NOW !!!"

And if you feel the burning urge to be just like Tom Cruise in Minoritory Report, you can indeed buy it now for a lazy USD$10,000. Expect to see units appearing in "public spaces" towards the end of 2007. Places like shops, restaurants, bars etc. Very Cool…

A Dead Fur Seal I Saw On My Beach Walk

I came across this fellow on my Sunday beach walk. A dead adult CAPE FUR SEAL washed up on the beach. I could not tell if it’s head was missing or just buried under the sand. There were no obvious injuries that I could see. Seemed to be fairly much intact. Was a long way from the water. Looked "fresh" so I reckon it washed up on the high tide the night before. It was a long way up the sand, only 4-5m from the highest tide mark on this beach.

Was a lot bigger than I thought they were. I’d estimate the body to be 120cm long, with another 30-40cm for the "feet" at the back. Very round and big in the body. I couldn’t have wrapped my arms around it. Estimate weight at 80-100kg.  I’ve seen these seals washed up these beaches before, but mostly younger ones about 1/3 the size of this specimen. I tried to include my foot in one picture for scale. Somehow it was bigger in real life than came out in the photo.

These fur seals breed just a few km’s from this very spot on the aptly named SEAL ROCKS off the coast of PHILLIP ISLAND.  This is the largest fur seal colony in the southern hemisphere. In fact you can just see Seal Rocks on the horizon of the photos that have the open water in them. The rest of the land on the horizon is Phillip Island.

You can CLICK HERE to view a map of the area and marker pins showing the exact locations of the dead seal in these photos and Seal Rocks where I guarantee this fellow was living happily on until recently.

VOTD: Tornado May 4th 2007 Ellis County

Wow… not bad. Guy is yelling a bit too much.
But I guess I probably would too if I was there taking that video.

My favourite part is at about 1m 30s when he pans up and shows the whole thing.  Granted, it’s not one of those giant big "black" tornadoes that rips buildings apart and flips cars across the road. But spectacular none the less.

This was taken on the same day when a giant
F5 tornado levelled the town of Greensburg in Kansas.

VOTD: A Firey Rube Goldberg Device

You’ve seen RUBE GOLDBERG devices in videos, you’ve seen them in cartoons, and television commercials. Not sure what the heck we’re talking about.  It one of THESE things…  "Ahhh.. those… I’ve seen those.   why didn’t you just SAY that to begin with…"

Well I’m tipping you’ve not seen one like his before…

The definition of a Rube Goldberg machine is "accomplishing by extremely complex roundabout means what actually or seemingly could be done simply"    Sound like anyone you know ?

Another more specific definition is "A machine or device is any exceedingly complex apparatus that performs a very simple task in a very indirect and convoluted way"

If you happen live near this guy and notice your cat, or first born is missing for several days, suggest you check the intarwebs for the latest Rube Goldberg video.
