These disturbing photos were taken with phonecam by WD after a big night out. Sitting on the edge of the bed, pondering if it was safe to lay my head down on the pillow, or if I needed to remain vertical just a bit longer. As I sat there reviewing the events of the night in my head, I noticed strange and demonic patterns appearing on the curtains in the room I was staying. The actual location will remain closely guarded secret for fear of Christian Fundamentalist reprisals. Those of you who recognise these curtains will know where they exist. Keep the secret safe, for the good of all that is holy and sacred.
Let me tell you, it’s was quite freaky at 4.12am in the morning when these images leapt out at me from what had once been merely simple bedroom curtains, but will now forever henceforth be known as DEMONIC…

The Jesus Phone… I Mean iPhone Arrives
The most over-hyped, over anticipated, over the hill… I’m over it already, mobile phone in history is due for release into the wild this Friday 29th June in the USA. Never before in tech-gadget history has so much been rumoured, speculated, written and talked about a device that is not even available for sale yet. Since it’s announcement at MacWorld in January 2007, the Apple Inc share price has risen over 30%, mostly due to the promise of the mystical, magical, mythical iPhone.
I‘m not going to add too much to the melting pot here at WD. As a mobile phone, the iPhone is overpriced and uses the old-hat 2.5G mobile network. The largest mobile phone markets in the world have all long since moved up to 3G technology. (Europe, Asia, Australia). As a portable consumer device that plays videos and music (iPod) it shows extreme promise of things to come. As a smart-phone portable computing internet device… we’ll wait and see how the touch screen interface translates across to that realm of user happiness.
Whether you like it or not, make no mistake… You WILL be hearing lots about this phone, so you need to be informed and make up your own mind about it’s worthiness. Click the picture to open the page and play the video. Or click this link to download the full-screen version (175MB).
After watching the video myself I have to say I’m very impressed with the PROMISE of what they are showing. The interface does for phones, what the iPod did for MP3 players. Clean, elegant, 110% Mac-like. However, in true Apple style, the reality-distortion-field is working overtime. There appears to be a lot of real-world things they are not showing us in this Guided Tour video. Things like loading times between screens, and loading times for websites, and music being played on the iPod section. How long DOES it take to type SMS message and names and phone numbers using the keyless touch screen interface. Let alone compose and reply to emails. All that stuff is conveniently left out of this promotional video. BUT… IF, Apple truly HAVE solved those issues and the iPhone is just as glorious in real life as in this video, then run, don’t walk, down to your share broker and buy as much (AAPL) as you can afford.
IF, remember IF…. and it’s a very big IF.
The iPhone will not appear in Australia until at least 2008, and it will not be the version released on Friday. Apple will release a newer, better, faster version for the 3G markets. They have to. Carriers throughout Europe and Asia have already stated publicly they are NOT interested in selling the iPhone in it’s current 2.5G version. Also stand by for new iPods using the same form factor (touch-screen, wide-screen) soon.
As a final note to this article, you might be wondering "How much does this thing COST ?" Well the iPhone itself is US$599 upfront at the phone shop. You can only get it with one company (AT&T) by locking into a 2 Year monthly contract for calls. The Data Plan to access the internet and email features is an EXTRA $40pm… total cost over the two years…. a touch over US$3100.. yes, that’s three thousand dollars US. Wow… it had BETTER be good for that money…

Stormy Sunday Afternoon Surfing
This is some video taken with the WD digicam on a stormy and freezing cold Sunday afternoon at Pt Leo. Air temperature was a chilly nine degrees C with a biting wind of 25-30km/h coming in from due south made it even colder. The water was actually the warmest place to be.
Indeed there were some brave surfing souls who ventured out to catch the waves and feel the invigoration of the icy winter weather. Did I mention it was also showering with rain on and off. Talk about COLD
Here is a MAP of the locations.

Kinetic Sculptures Powered By The Wind
Dutch artisit Theo Jansen calls himself a kinetic sculptor (what ever THAT is…
) who builds mechanical works of art that are self-powered by the wind. Whatever it is he does, Theo is a very clever man with an amazing "da Vinci" like vision for the structure and movement of the natural world. The results are spectacular…

Drobo - Your Data Storage Robot
BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP… That should be the thought running through your mind everyday if you own a computer. If your not doing it now, then you will. I’m not going to be too preachy here because I believe that the critical importance of GOOD data back is one of those things in life that has to be learnt, rather than taught. People only implement a solid data backup solution AFTER they have lost critical data at some point in their lives. I know that’s what happened to me many years ago.
Loosing mission critical data at some point in your life is not a matter of IF, but WHEN. If it’s already happened to you, then you know the pain and loss involved. You’ve just lost years worth of irreplaceable digital photographs, or weeks worth of school assignments, or the last four years of your company finicial records and employee data, or ALL of the above if it’s all on the one machine. You already know that when it happens, you would pay just about anything to have that data back. Unfortunately this is more than often not possible. And in cases where it is possible, recovery requires the services of specialised data recovery firms, using highly specialist equipment, working in clean-rooms, to recover the data. This level of service will typically cost several thousand dollars just for them to take a look and give you an assessment. Then add many many thousands more to actually recover your data.
ENTER DROBO.
Drobo is the first consumer device of it’s kind to hit the market and has the potential to bring affordable enterprise level data security to the home user. Despite it’s name, Drobo is not a robot of any kind. It won’t walk around your computer desk searching for errant 1’s and 0’s. It’s just a box. But a very useful and clever box. I won’t explain it all here because the video does a much better job.
If the Drobo does what it promises, and early indications and reviews are that it will, then every home will have a "Drobo" device within five years. This first model is a little too pricey in my mind at USD$499 before adding any hard-disks. But compared to similar consumer NAS (network attached storage) devices out there, it’s not too bad. This first model of Drobo is USB 2.0 only. They need to add eSATA and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. And drop 1/3 off the price. Then it will EAT the market up.
Learn more about Drobo over at the company’s site.
